To the unsuspecting visitor, Pequeno Mundo may go completely unnoticed. Off the main road to Almancil, down a dusty path with very few signposts, this family-run restaurant opens into a courtyard overflowing with vibrant bougainvillaea and Portuguese charm. Couples honeymooning in the Algarve are invited to take a seat on their back terrace and enjoy an aperitif while waiting for a table. The menu is comprised of mainly French dishes, created by chef Valentim Carmo who was trained by Guy Doré. Raised in the north of Portugal, Carmo passionately applies the native flavours of his home region into his dishes, fusing French and Portuguese cuisine and always pairing his dishes with the best local wines. And while the specials change often, the menu is tried and true – remaining constant throughout the years and seasons. Famous for their mussel soup served with a flaky puff pastry, our other favourite menu items include thai prawn curry, Bouillabaisse, and a divine chocolate fondant on vanilla custard.
